A Modern Basement Extension With An All-Glass Basement Door – Prestige Windows + Doors
This traditional single family house was completely renovated with a light filled basement extension. The luxury home extended its usable living space and created direct connections to the garden thanks to it’s all glass basement doors.
A four pane glass door was used to the basement extension to connect the lower ground floor living areas with the small exterior patio and courtyard. The sliding basement door was designed in a bi- parting configuration with the centre glass doors meeting on the same track in the middle of the opening.
The aluminium frames of the basement door were finished in a light grey powder coat to match the light interior design palette of both the interior space and the external rendering. With floor to ceiling glass and minimal sight lines to the sliding basement doors, the outdoor patio becomes part of the interior seamlessly connecting the internal and external spaces across the flush threshold track.
A 95mm interlock is found in the middle of the door opening thanks to the architect and client’s commitment to symmetry. Where bi-parting sliding glass doors like this meet in the middle on the same track you get a slightly larger vertical interlock. A continuous sightline of 21mm at this centre connection is possible if the sliding doors are sliding on staggered track systems.

The type 2 manual lock was used on this project to create a secure sliding basement door to the home. This manual lock is only accessible from inside and offers the highest levels of security possible with PAS 24 certification.
Beyond the sliding basement doors, you find a large open plan kitchen diner, as well as a cleverly designed play area for the children. Directly outside the sliding glass doors is the outdoor dining area and patio space.
